Dear Campus Community,
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Kim Strom-Gottfried has agreed to serve as the director, ethics education and policy management, effective Aug. 1. Dr. Strom-Gottfried is the Smith P. Theimann Jr. Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Professional Practice in the School of Social Work and a highly respected member of the faculty.
In this cabinet-level position, Dr. Strom-Gottfried will serve as the University’s leader for policy management practices and coordination of our ethics and integrity efforts, allowing Carolina to continually implement best practices across campus. Her skills and experience are an excellent match for this important role. This new position was created on the joint recommendation of two working groups: Ethics and Integrity, and Policy and Procedure, which were commissioned after the release of the Wainstein Report in 2014.
Dr. Strom-Gottfried will focus on coordinating ethics programs and reporting mechanisms, along with overseeing management of the University’s policy infrastructure. In addition, she will serve as an advocate for ethics resources and programs, helping identify, coordinate and promote ethics-related opportunities across campus.
At Carolina since 1999, Dr. Strom-Gottfried has held several roles in the School of Social Work, including serving as interim dean from 2000 to 2001. She was also the Director of the Academic Leadership Program for the Institute for the Arts and Humanities from 2008 to June 2016.
Dr. Strom-Gottfried earned her doctorate from Case Western Reserve University. She also holds a master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Maine.
I especially want to thank Todd Nicolet for serving as the interim director of ethics and integrity. In just five months, he developed a strong foundation for this new office and a wonderful network across campus.
